Recently I was asked to help out with branding for a new YouTube channel. I was given some guidelines and after a few discussions I was told to have my way with it. We went through a couple rounds of ideas and then settled upon the logos above. The top graphic is the main logo and the bottom is an alternate. Simple, clean and effective. My kind of work.
If you know me then you know I can’t be letting a good opportunity go to waste and I immediately started making other things as well. I immediately wanted to create a quick set of typographic posters based around alcohol. Start with a word, decide on a background shape, add a little bit of grit and away we go. Artwork to lighten up your alcoholic den of depression and perversions.
I also wanted to create some graphics to use as merchandise or whatever else the client had in mind. The first two ideas that stuck out to me on my list were a barrel pram and a barrel baby. Two different styles for maximum fun.
I really can’t say why but I was immediately drawn toward a Victorian era/style and I just had to create a barrel pram for pushing the wee one around in. After that I created the barrel baby. It started out creepy and then ended up completely amazing. A not-so-subtle tribute to King of the Hill with the line work and coloring is evident if you’re a fan of the show. The more I got into this idea the more I decided not to fight it and I even created a bunch of color palettes based on the characters. Anyway, I am definitely NOT an illustrator so these two little ditties are something I’m fairly proud of. They have some good style and both pleased the client. Can’t ask for anything more than that.
I’m sure more oddness will appear as the client gets down the road with his endeavor. I’ve also made a baby age blanket for him and I’m waiting for that to arrive before posting some photos of it in action. Overall this has been a fun project that I hope continues for some time to come. Combining two very different entities like this isn’t the easiest but if your client has an open mind and isn’t scared to take some risks then it can become something entertaining and engaging.
